Miriam Kachelmeier, SSND
Professed in 1939

Sister Miriam KachelmeierSister Miriam Kachelmeier celebrates 70 years as a School Sister of Notre Dame. She ministered as a teacher and librarian.

A meaningful time in my ministry…
The most meaningful scripture passage that has been with me during my entire life is from the prophet Isaiah, “My precious one, I hold you in the palm of my hand.”

What drew you to the SSND Community?
The sisters at Holy Name School in Sheboygan, Wisconsin were a great influence in my choosing to become an SSND. I liked to be with them, especially when we, as students, helped them out with the garden work.

My mother found it very difficult to let me go to the SSND Aspiranture. I was 14 and very immature but mother never let me know how she felt about my going so early. Only after I was professed did I realize the struggle she had, to let me go…but God was holding me in the palm of his hand and she knew it.

Is there anything else that you would like to share?
I was a classroom teacher for 48 years, working in grades kindergarten through grade nine. I have always loved books and so was drawn to library work for many years, handling both the library and the classroom. The art of story telling became a favorite of mine. For these gifts, I praise the Lord once again – he was holding me in the palm of his hand.

I entered the charismatic renewal in 1972, which resulted in a radical change in my walk with Jesus. I became so much more aware of his intimate personal goodness and love. Hopefully, now, as I am growing older and about to celebrate my gold and ruby jubilee, I like to think of Jesus and me, as bridegroom and bride, deeply in love for 70 years, growing old together, knowing one another better, and loving one another more intimately than before. He has always been waiting to be gracious to me as he continues to hold me in the palm of his hand.
