Milwaukee Achiever Literacy Services
The mission of Milwaukee Achiever Literacy Services is to inspire and empower adult learners to gain the skills necessary to enrich their lives through education and training in an atmosphere of mutual acceptance and respect.
The School Sisters of Notre Dame were one of three communities of women religious to co-found Milwaukee Achiever Literacy Services in 1983. The organization came into being when Alverno, Cardinal Stritch, and Mount Mary Colleges responded to a 1982 needs assessment called "Milwaukee 2000," which found one of every six Milwaukee residents to be functionally illiterate, meaning that they had insufficient skills for obtaining information from the written word.
To date, Milwaukee Achiever Literacy Services has successfully served over 10,000 highly motivated adults who have come to learn because they identify education as the key to lift themselves out of poverty and begin a self-directed, productive life.
About 650 adult learners receive services annually through Milwaukee Achiever neighborhood centers. The center locations are:
