Picture of Sister Frances Mary

Gloria List, SSND
(Previous religious name: Sister Immacula)
Professed in 1958

Sister Gloria List celebrates 50 years as a School Sister of Notre Dame. She has ministered as a dentist, teacher, and university professor.

A meaningful time in my ministry…
My retirement party from Marquette University’s School of Dentistry was very special when the speeches affirmed me and recognized how much I had contributed to change the school in positive ways. The alums announced a scholarship endowed with my name on it as an appreciation for my efforts and support while they were students.

What drew you to the SSND Community?
I wanted to be a teacher and I respected my SSND teachers as dedicated, focused and self sacrificing.

What has it meant to you to be a sister through the years?
Being a sister allowed me to focus on my ministry to society without the burdens of worrying about money and material things. It freed me to search for a deeper relationship to God and the real reasons I was created.

What would you like people to know about the School Sisters of Notre Dame?
I see my SSND colleagues as dedicated, caring, loving people who sustain a dynamic energy to continue to strive to transform society and church, even against great odds of diminishing numbers and prejudice against women, especially in the church.

What words of encouragement or wisdom would you offer to a woman exploring the possibility of a vocation as a woman religious?
Have courage. Get ready to face opposition from many sides. Study the Gospels and be daring to live the life Christ calls us to, knowing it’s counter cultures most of the way.

What is your current ministry?
Part time teacher at Marquette University School of Dentistry, semi-retired doing a good share of volunteer work at my parish, serving on several committees, assembly, associate board, SUNSEED program at Mount Calvary, etc. I’m very busy!

Is there anything else that you would like to share with people about your life?
The journey has been challenging but oh so rewarding. I never dreamt that I as one person could do what I did during these years. I amaze myself – knowing full well that God was with me every step of the way, urging me on and picking me up when I needed help.
