YES— I support comprehensive immigration reform that…

  • Establishes family unity as a priority of all immigration policies.
  • Creates a process for undocumented immigrants to earn their legal status and eventual citizenship.
  • Reforms employment-based immigration, so that workers can enter the United States and work in a safe, controlled, and humane manner.
  • Aligns the enforcement of immigration laws with humanitarian values and reforms detention policies to conform to international law.
  • Restores due process protections.
  • Reforms the asylum system to uphold our nation’s long-held commitment to provide protection for those fleeing persecution.
  • Promotes trade and aid policies which help address the root causes of migration.

Sisters Josephe Marie Flynn and Barbara Pfarr

Their Story: Our Story

School Sisters of Notre Dame commemorated the anniversary of the July 31, 1847 arrival of the congregation’s sisters in the United States. The sisters came to minister to German immigrants and have been working with immigrants of all backgrounds ever since. The public was invited to an inspiring presentation and prayer on the evening of July 30 at Notre Dame of Elm Grove.

Sisters Joseph Marie Flynn and Barbara Pfarr recalled the rich 162-year history of SSND service to immigrants in the U.S. to a great turnout of people. SSND ministers to immigrants in a wide variety of ways, through our sponsored institutions, ministries, parish involvements and volunteer activities. They shared the challenges facing today’s immigrants and illustrated how systems and services for immigrants in our country are broken and in need of comprehensive reform.

Regina Bakala

While sobering facts and figures were addressed, listeners were urged to go beyond the numbers to hear the stories. One special guest, Regina Bakala told her story. Her account was compelling and heart-wrenching. She experienced arrest, imprisonment, separation from family (including two young children), and near deportation. With the support, prayers and work of Sister Josephe Marie, St. Mary’s in Hales Corners parishioners and many others, Regina’s release was secured.

Sister Barbara urged all on hand to let their voices be heard about the need for comprehensive immigration reform. There is legislative activity going on at both state and federal level and there is real optimism that transformation could occur this legislative session.
